Second session:Economic growth and social sustainability

Economic growth in cities is dependent on as well as impacts upon the levels of social sustainability, education, employment, migration. It also influences the location of the main urban functions, the distribution of population, and the access to urban services. Cities have designed various sets of policies to integrate social considerations into the process of urban development.

Third session: Economic growth and adequate urban living conditions

Economic growth in large cities is related to the concentration of population and companies. The mixed nature of most cities requires adequate facilities for the support of adequate urban living conditions (drink water supplying and processing, sewage system and used water treatment, waste collection and treatment, street cleaning, etc.) and policies to address the issue of pollution (nature and location of factories, urban planning, transport system, etc.) and risks (flood, earthquake, etc.). Public authorities have to shoulder a large responsibility in this regard and often face contradictory demands.

The sustainability of cities requires a reflection on the crucial mix that embodies the expression public and private interests and the involvement of all the actors in public decisions : population, economic actors, elected people. The urban management has different shapes, due to different public organizations : state, region, agglomeration, town. How are the responsibilities shared betwen all of them? How to organize the public-private partnerships.
