PECC Chair Delivers PECC's Key Recommendations for Strengthening Domestic Financial Institutions and Developing an Asian Bond Market to APEC Finance Ministers 
2-3 September 2004

PECC's Chair, Dr. Kim Kihwan delivered the findings of PECC Finance Forum which carried the theme of "Institution Building in a World of Free and Volatile Capital Flows" to the APEC Finance Ministers in Santiago, Chile.  PECC recommends APEC to:

  • consider launching a peer review process over reform efforts by individual governments 
  • appreciate the importance of supporting the efforts of its Asian members to build a regional financial architecture in their sub-region.

Successful end to the 3rd Annual Conference

The Finance Forum 3rd Annual Conference held in Santiago in June ended on a successful note.  Attended by distinguished speakers such as Professor Barry Eichengreen who gave the keynote speech, Sergio Lehmann of the Central Bank of Chile and William Witherell of the OECD, the conference looked at the financial architecture of the APEC region and the challenges it faces and what can be done to meet these challenges.  The results of the conference and the recommendations were presented later on to the APEC Finance Ministers' Technical Working Group in Arica by Professor Sangghon Rhee and Dr. J.C. Building Financial Stability from the Foundation: Financial Stability Highlighted at PECC General Meeting

A panel of distinguished experts discussed the priority areas for financial policy at the PECC General Meeting in Brunei last 1-3 September. 

The panel (from left), Mr. John Ridding (Editor and Publisher, Financial Times Asian Edition), Mr. David Eldon (Chairman, Hong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd), Finance Forum Coordinator Dr. Soogil Young, Dr. Jesus Estanislao (President & CEO, Institute of Corporate Directors), and Dr. Jefrrey Koo (Chairman, Chinatrust Financial Holdings).

The Finance Forum also organised workshops the roadmap for financial integration in East Asia, new regional integration initiatives in the Asia Pacific, the regional bond market initiative, and the challenges posed by Basel II for the region.
