Founded in 1980, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council has
grown to become one of the Asia Pacific’s most influential
organizations. It is a policy innovator in trade, finance,
information technology, human capacity building, urban
development, energy and mining.
PECC & APEC
PECC led the call for the formation of an official forum
for the discussion of trade and economic policy in the
region which led to the creation of APEC in 1989.
PECC has 23 member committees, two associate members and
two institutional members. The Pacific Rim has a population
of over 2.5 billion and a combined GDP of over 19 trillion
US dollars accounting for 47 percent of world trade.
PECC is the only non-government official observer of the
APEC process and continues to provide vital information and
views on trade, finance, and sectoral issues to the region’s
governments.
A Dialogue for Change
The Council brings together leading thinkers, and decision
makers from government and business in an informal setting to
discuss and formulate ideas on the most significant challenges
facing the Asia Pacific. At PECC’s heart are its member
committees composed of individuals who believe that
participation is the best way to make policies that are
relevant and operational.
In an increasing complex global world PECC provides an
opportunity for greater understanding of the strategic
business environment and the ability to influence thinking and
policy across the region.
Policy Innovation: Track Record
PECC is a policy innovator, using its expert networks to
formulate ideas on how to improve the business environment.

Participation: Commitment to Economic Cooperation
Participation in the PECC Process depends on a commitment to
economic cooperation in the Pacific. PECC participants, seek
to achieve increased, open regional economic cooperation and
interaction, while recognising both the realities of, and the
benefits accruing from, global interdependence and continuing
to encourage increased economic cooperation and interaction
with other nations and regions.
PECC’s Work Program: Building Consensus
PECC’s work is undertaken on three Forums: Trade; Finance
and Community Building. Each Forum has an International
Advisory Group composed of expert representatives from each
member committee as well as representatives from multilateral
institutions. PECC’s tripartite approach enables businesses
to have their voice heard in an environment that encourages a
constructive dialogue.
The PECC General Meeting
The PECC General Meeting brings together the region's leading
thinkers, businessmen and officials to discuss the vital
issues of the day. PECC Brunei 2003 is the Fifteenth
General Meeting of the Council. The General Meeting now takes
place every two years and is hosted by the committee chairing
the PECC Standing Committee.
